01 · Model behaviour
Understanding latent space
Suno does not reason about music theory in the way a musician does. It navigates a high-dimensional map of learned sound relationships. Asking for “Industrial Metal” moves the output towards one area of that map; adding texture, instrumentation and structure narrows the position.
Some coordinates are stickier than others. Broad words invite the model to settle into common defaults; specific, compatible descriptors create a clearer production target.
02 · Avoid the default
The pop gravity well
Training data strongly represents familiar verse–chorus pop structures. A niche genre request paired with a standard structure can drift back towards generic melodies and arrangement choices.
Escape with constraint. Use a non-standard structure where the genre calls for it, reinforce instrument and texture cues, and exclude the most obvious unwanted direction.
A dark experimental song. Make it unusual.Subjective, underspecified and easy to resolve as generic alternative pop.
[Industrial Noise, 7/8 pulse, prepared metal percussion, no pop chorus]Names a sound world, rhythmic constraint and arrangement boundary.
03 · The method
Stop prompting like a search box.
Treat the input as an architectural Blueprint. Define the sonic vocabulary first, then the section plan, then the performance changes that matter.
A sad song about a robot losing power in the rain. Make it sound like Radiohead.“Sad” is subjective, the artist reference is unsuitable, and the lack of structure leaves the model to improvise the arrangement.
Genre: Art Rock · Glitch · Ambient RainSpecific sub-genres, texture and a deliberate intro establish a much clearer coordinate.
[Genre: Art Rock, Glitch, Ambient Rain] [Style: Melancholic, Lo-Fi, Experimental] [Exclude: Generic Pop, Bright Major Key] [Intro: Rain Sample, Distorted Bass] [Verse 1: Intimate, Restrained] ... [Chorus: Wider Vocal, Harmonic Lift] ...
04 · Lyric control
Structural integrity rules
Keep one core image
Models mix imagery easily. Choose one central metaphor—rust, static, glass, distance—and make each section deepen it rather than abandon it.
Keep matching sections singable
Verse 1 and Verse 2 should stay within roughly two syllables per corresponding line when you want the same rhythmic delivery.
///*****/// [Style: Dark Synthwave] [Intro] (Slow build up) [Verse 1] ...
Use a clear separator between instruction blocks and lyrics when a model begins singing metadata or production notes.
